My great grandmother passed away and i got this necklace that has a 20 dollar gold coin from 1776. how could i tell if it was real or a replica?

The US Mint opened in 1792, so there's little chance that it's real. If it looks like this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Gaudens_double_eagle, its fake
