Are the seiral numbers on gold bars registered?

I wanted to buy gold bars as an investment but was worried about the risks.

What happens if you are victim of a robbery? Can we find them back or what would be the best insurance for it?

Thank you for considering the question, please try to answer if you know anything about it.

Yes - so are the serial numbers - but that won't help when they steal them and melt them down !

If the gold bars are stolen, you lose. This is one of the negatives of buying actual gold. You can buy insurance, but that reduces the profit. You can have a metals dealer store them, but then you will have to pay his storage charges and reimburse him for his insurance. Your homeowner's insurance probably has an exclusion for things like that which are not normal household goods, unless you buy a special rider.

Gold does not pay interest or dividends, so it is not an investment. It is speculation because you make nothing if the price doesn't go up.

If you are the victim of a robbery you will lose some valuable assets, whether that is gold or not. I think it is difficult to insure gold, maybe because of the high value/ small weight. The gold in the major vaults, apparentley is not insured or insurable. The bigeest risk is the voltility of the gold price. Also the exposure to US$
I would buy around the $850 mark, not near $950 (now $908)

First off, it's a huge leap if you think the police, will ever recover your bars (if they were stolen). Don't keep precious metals in your home, and you won't have to worry about robbery.

I have gold in the form of Krugerrands. They stay in my safety deposit box at the bank.
